Hey There Hexy Ladies

Last post I mentioned that a few days ago we travelled to PEI.  Well, it takes 3.5 hours to drive from our place to Charlottetown, so I needed a little something to do on the drive ...
-
Let me introduce these hexy ladies.  Those are 1 inch hexagons.
I am making novelty I-Spy type hexies as my summer travel project.  They are just to make as we're driving somewhere.  I have an end project in mind, a hexagon I-Spy quilt.  It won't all be hexagons, but rather hexies appliqued in a pattern.  I have the idea in my head and I think it will work.  I probably need 192 hexagons for a good lap-sized quilt.
It just takes the smallest of scraps to make these.
Fun!  Do you have a summer travel project?

Riel, is there no end to your creativity!!
Most of those would have had to be fussy cut. Wow.

Those are the cutest thing! I am just learning embroidery so I am thinking that would be great for travel.

They are so very hexy! And you are so funny!

I can't do projects in the car; it distracts me from driving. Haha.

Hey Riel, would you tell us how you do these? I know how to make hexies, but I have found that I need to iron the seams in before basting them, otherwise they end up wonky on the back - 1/16th seam on one side and 3/8th seam on the other. You are obviously not ironing your hexies in the car - so please tell me your process. Thanks.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the great feedback. Since Janet was wondering about my method, I thought I'd answer here too in case anyone else was curious ...

Basically, I use precut cardboard hexies which I order from www.paperpieces.com. Since I am fussy cutting I put the cardboard right over top of my design I want. I cut about 3/8 to 1/2 inch with my rotary cutter all the way around. I guesstimate. My fabric scraps almost all look like swiss cheese. ;-) Then because I have a bigger amount of fabric on the back, I find it easier to fold nice and tight at each corner and pinch it all securely with my left hand while I put two stitches in at each corner (through the fabric only, not the paper) with my right. I put the stitches right through the fold. I go all the way around and put a final stitch back where I started. I don't knot anything. Hope this helps. The next time I do some hexies I'll try to remember to get my husband to click a couple of pics of me. Please feel free to ask anything else if this just sounds confusing.

The first group - the Hexy Ladies - are my favourite!

Haven't tried hexagons in quilting - come to think of it, I haven't even tried triangles yet! Squares, rectangles, strips and applique (with straight edges) is my experience so far. I am only on my third quilt and all my work is done on machine - my travel projects are usually knitting.

Those are really neat!

Hexies are my travel project too. I just started this week. The first ones will be for doll quilt I'm making for a swap. When those are done I will be working on a hexi Christmas tree skirt. I have it planned out in my head, I just hope it will work as I put it together. :)

What a fun idea! I never thought of using the tiny hexies for a 1 patch I Spy. My travel project is also hexagon...but a hexagon flower in repro fabrics. I started it several years ago...rediscovered it this spring and have been working on it. I am curious how your setting is going to be with the hexies.

Enjoy traveling!
